Free Comic Book Day
Saturday, May 2
Future Dreams, 1847 E Burnside St (and many other participating locations)
Get a free comic book (maybe two?). Graphic art storytelling is that rare gem which offers a format that forces the mind to work (technique known as "gutter magic") and offers creators nearly unlimited creativity -- and, unlike movies, has very little environmental impact. Many companies produce aone extra annual offering just for Free Comic Book Day, so the time is nigh.

No Ivy Day
Saturday, May 2nd
Work parties from 9:00-12:00
Food and celebration from 12:30-2:00pm
Lower Macleay Park, 2960 NW Upshur
No Ivy League's 15th anniversary, a program of Portland Parks and Recreation working to restore the native habitat of Forest Park and other natural areas. English ivy threatens the health and sustainability of our natural areas every day as its choking vines work to strangle trees, outcompete native plants and disperse its invasive seeds of destruction. The No Ivy League focuses on removing invasive plants, youth development programs, environmental education, and seeking relevant societal changes.
We will be coordinating ivy removal. This celebration will also mark the No Ivy League's 15th anniversary so we would love to see you there. You can show your passion for native ecosystems (and your disdain for ivy) by joining a work party at one of our locations throughout the region or by registering to host your own No Ivy Day site. Please click on No Ivy Day at www.portlandonline.com/parks/noivyleague to see a list of work party sites or register for our event on May 2nd. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the celebration.
Together, we face an ever-looming threat to the sustainable health of our natural environments. Thank you for your support of Portland Parks and Recreation, the No Ivy League, youth empowerment and invasive plant removal!

Sponsor United Voices 'Zinw bundles
How to be a patron of literature and the arts AND support youth as they organize for social change AND help spread truth-in-recruiting and anti-militarism information to youth. The form, link below, that enables you to sponsor a copy or copies (a 'zine "bundle") of the United Voices 'zine that will be distributed to young people:
http://www.thesocialistparty.org/spo/action/'Zine_Sponsorship.doc
The 'zine: The 'zine is absolutely gorgeous! It includes 38 pages of art, poetry, prose and photography. It is entirely youth-created and youth-edited. It is the product of over three months (twice a week!) of intense work on behalf of the youth contributors, and the effort shows.
How YOU can help: United Voices intends to distribute the 'zine free of charge to youth. It needs YOU to help make this possible. The first printing of the 'zine was for 150 copies and these are almost all gone. Some were distributed at the 'zine release party. A "bundle" went to a 'zine lending library in Olympia, Washington. The AFSC-Seattle Office also purchased a "bundle." The United Voices teens are, of course, distributing copies to their peers.
United Voices intends to reprint copies. These copies will be distributed to youth clubs at the various high schools; through the Teen Councils at the local public library; school libraries; community centers; etc. PLEASE help support youth as they organize for social change. Times are really difficult economically right now. Unfortunately, this also means that the military is having an easier time of meeting its recruitment quotas. For a $5.00 donation, you can help 2 teens rethink military enlistment. For a $10.00 donation, you can help 5 teens rethink military enlistment.
The link below is to the form that tells you how you can help youth reach out to other youth. Your donation also enables you or your organization to be acknowledged as a 'zine patron. There is a blank on the rear cover of the 'zine indicating, "This zine brought to you free of charge THANKS TO: _____________."

County/City Survey Seeks Public Input to Guide Budget Decisions
Multnomah County has joined with the City of Portland to survey the public about priorities in local government services. Multnomah County is facing a budget shortfall of over $45 million for the next two fiscal years, forcing the Board of County Commissioners to make difficult decisions about reductions to county programs and services.
Community input is critically important to help guide those decisions. The County is gathering your input through a number of ways. Please spend a few moments to take this online survey. Let us know what you think about which services are most important to you. You can link to the survey from Chair Wheeler’s website:
http://www.multco.us/chair . Share this message with others.
