"Voices in Conflict"
Thursday, January 15; Friday, January 16; Saturday, January 17
Cleveland High School, 3400 S.E. 26th Avenue (S.E. 26th Avenue and S.E. Powell Boulevard) (plenty of parking directly across from the School)
7:00 p.m. (tickets purchased at door before the performance)
Cost: $5.00 students, seniors and veterans; $8.00 for general public. (The original announcement indicated general admission price as $8.00; the BEE announcement indicates $7.00, so it may be $7.00.)
"This class project is the result of student research into the War and those who serve. The goal is to promote an unbiassed perspective of the War using a series of verbatim monologues and interactive scene work from soldiers, military administration members, family members and the media. Students are representing real people such as Charlie Anderson, Tammy Duckworth, Kelly Dougherty, Iraqi civilians and exiles and Mark Delgado's mother."
A "talk back" will be offered at the end of each performance. According to Ms. Ferguson, the director of the production and the Cleveland High School drama instructor, the audience is free to leave after the performance. However, if people choose, they may remain afterwards to critique the performance and to ask questions of the performers. There will be approximately 8 to 12 students available after every performance to answer questions.
There was an article in the December 26, 2008 edition of THE SELLWOOD BEE about the performance:
http://www.thebeenews.com/news/story.php?story_id=123000191731295100
This is a good opportunity to support the Cleveland High School Drama Department in its decision to present a more "serious" play in lieu of its usual musical. It is also a good opportunity to do student outreach.
Peace,
Joanne Luchini

PDC Announces 2009 Homebuyer Workshop Series
The Portland Development Commission (PDC) will hold eleven free homebuyer workshops in 2009. The PDC’s “How to Buy a Home of Your Own Workshop” will introduce attendees to the many different first-time homebuyer programs that are available in Portland to help individuals and families buy a home of their own. The free workshops will cover:
* Below-Market Rate Home Loans
* Federal Homebuyer Tax Credit programs
* Down Payment Assistance Loans
* Purchase and Renovation Loans
* Limited Tax Abatement Programs
* Non-Profit partners and much more
These programs are designed to help income-eligible households increase their purchasing power, reduce the amount of cash they need to close, and lower their monthly payments. PDC offers only fixed rate financing to ensure its’ customers can continue to afford their house payments. “There are a lot of great first-time homebuyer programs in Portland” said Jon Gail, Marketing and Outreach Coordinator for PDC. “Unfortunately though, people often don’t ever hear about them from their lender or real estate agent. Many eligible homebuyers are missing out on these programs and the opportunity to have a more affordable house payment.”
PDC has scheduled the workshops in a variety of locations throughout Portland. The locations and schedule of classes are as follows:
* Jan. 13, 2009 – Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N Brandon, 6 - 7:30 PM

Vancouver
Action at Sen. Cantwell's office, Mon. Jan. 12. Meet in parking lot across street from office building, 3:30. Go in together. Brian Willoughby is Cantwell's staff who we will each speak to briefly, handing to him any documents to support our stand in support of Gazans, a ceasefire, etc. After each speaks, we will lay down and "play dead" until closing. We can then get up and say we are free to go home in safety, the Gazans are not.
So far a handful of people have committed to come. All encouraged!
peace,
genny
