Recruiter Watch

Volunteers are needed to help with the distribution of "bookmark" fliers in front of local high schools on weekday mornings. We do it once a week (often on Tuesday) from 7:30 a.m. till 8:15 a.m. for about ten weeks in the fall and again in the spring. If you can lend a hand just a couple of times, that would be a big help to our regular crew, who need a break now and then.

The outreach to students gives them contact information if they have questions about recruiter promises, draft registration, requirements for conscientious objection, etc. It also provides a short counter-recruiting message.

If you are interested in helping with student outreach, please call John Grueschow at (503) 238-0605. This project is sponsored by the Military & Draft Counseling Project, War Resisters' League.

Thank you very much for any and all support.

In peace,

Joanne Luchini

On behalf of Recruiter Watch PDX

Gift Trees — Green Gifts that Keep on Giving

This holiday season give your friends and family green gifts that keep on giving as they grow—Gift Trees and Gift Groves. For $35 you can order a Gift Tree, and for $100 you can order a Gift Grove. Friends of Trees will plant the young native trees in local natural areas in need of restoration.

Orders can be placed at "Gift Trees" at www.FriendsofTrees.org. You can include the name of the person the trees will be planted in honor of, a personalized message, and the name of the person giving the gift. Friends of Trees will print your gift acknowledgment card and mail it for you within three business days of the date you place your order.

In addition to slowing climate change, trees reduce air and water pollution by trapping pollutants on their leaves and roots, and they help us even more as they grow. Buying a gift tree leaves a living legacy for the people you love.

As Friends of Trees heads into our 20th anniversary year, we celebrate the more than 360,000 trees and native plants that our thousands of volunteers have planted in the Portland-Vancouver area, increasing our region's tree cover over recent decades as a dozen large U.S. cities lost about a quarter of their tree cover. Expanding the range of our work this fall and winter, Friends of Trees has scheduled plantings in more than 70 Portland, Vancouver and Gresham neighborhoods and at natural areas in four counties.

To learn more about Gift Trees or Friends of Trees, visit www.FriendsofTrees.org or call Melissa at 503-282-8846 ext. 23.
