Health Equity Initiative
You may have been wondering, "What's next for the Health Equity Initiative?"
As you know, since last March, Multnomah County has been one of several communities across the country to feature the Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? documentary in a series of community discussions. So far, over 600 community members have viewed Unnatural Causes and participated in community discussions about local opportunities to promote health through policy change and service improvements.
Thanks to your participation and commitment to social justice, the Multnomah County Health Equity Initiative collected the ideas participants offered for how to make Multnomah County a healthy and vibrant community for all. We now have a thorough summary of suggestions for policies that promote health equity.
As promised, to move forward, we'd like to share with participants what we’ve heard at our community dialogues. We would also like to learn more about what Multnomah County considers to be their health equity priorities. We will use your priorities, recommendations and lessons learned in developing a health equity policy agenda for Multnomah County.
Beginning in September, 2008 the Health Equity Initiative will share the input collected from participants in the community dialogues. These report backs will highlight policy options for community members to discuss and prioritize. The report backs are free and open to the public. YOUTH EMPOWER YOUTH FEST!!!
Sunday, September 28
11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
North Star Ballroom, 635 North Killingsworth Court, Portland 97217
Free!
Contact: Mireaya Medina, Program Director of the AFSC's United Voices/Beats for Peace
(503) 933-1048; mmedina@afsc.org
"Young people will sound off and unite at Youth Empower Youth Fest. On Sunday, September 28, youth from Portland and surrounding areas will show our community their creative expression about their lives, their community and their world. All youth are invited to attend and encouraged to participate through sharing, learning, organizing and networking with other young people at this free event.
"This event is funded in part by a City of Portland Youth Action grant that was written by two youth from the United Voices/Beats for Peace program with the intention of showcasing young people and as a vehicle to get more youth involved in their community.
"Youth Empower Youth Fest will include workshops by slam poetry artist and Black Women's Studies Professor Turiya Autry and long-time event planning guru, Noah Mickens. Music performances by true school hip hop artists, Line of Fire (Mic Crenshaw and Gen-Eric), electro pop duo Crab Cannon, and more. Youth fest will also hold discussion forums for youth, an open mic, arts and activism and dancing."
Recruiter Watch has been invited to table at this event -- and to bring out Opt-Out forms! Some assistance may also be sought in publicizing this event (i.e., leaving announcements at public libraries, the schools where we are doing the opt-out campaign, etc.). Mireaya and the rest of the AFSC staff is out of town at the AFSC annual retreat this weekend. I'm supposed to meet her on Monday to get final details.
If you have young people in your life -- whether your own, neighbors, friends, relatives -- please invite them to this event. If you want to be a young person for five hours, volunteer with Recruiter Watch to table at this event and we can live vicariously!

Citizen Budget Advisory Committees
Did you know that Multnomah County is facing a significant budget reduction for the next fiscal year? Would you like to be part of a citizen group that advises the county commissioners on how to make that reduction so that every dollar is spent as wisely as possible?
Consider joining a Citizen Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC). Citizen Budget Advisory Committees work with managers and staff of County offices and departments and directly advise the county commissioners. Committee members provide expert advice on priorities during the budget development process. They also advise departments and offices throughout the budget year as to how the budget implementation is going. As a resident of Multnomah County you have the right to say how you want your tax money spent; to plan for the future; to recommend programs, operations and policies; and to advise on budget and services. CBACs provide you a way to make your voice heard.
Give the Multnomah County Office of Citizen Involvement a call at 503-988-3450 or e-mail us at citizen.involvement@co.multnomah.or.us for more details.

Vancouver for Peace
Because of other committments, I will be unable to do tabling at Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Mike and Kay Ellison and i have kept this table going this year. It would be very much appreciated if some of the rest of you would take some turns at the table.
We have maintained this presence at the market for six years now and a great many people have appreciated the work that has been done. (And some have been thoroughly ticked off, which makes the days interesting.)
I will do what I can to assist any who will volunteer for any Saturday. We have some standard stuff that goes on the table each week and we welcome anyone's concerns that deal with peace and justice.
Peace,
Wilbur Wood contact me on this subject: tablesforpeace@aol.com
