EYES WIDE OPEN Event
Saturday, September 20, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Holladay Park (near the Lloyd Center Mall MAX Station)
Recruiter Watch is being allowed to table at this event, which is sponsored by the AFSC and local Quaker Churches and Meetings. Details about volunteer opportunities will be forthcoming in a separate e-mail. This will be a good opportunity to do student outreach because the Mall is a popular youth "hang."
Vp;unteer Opportunities: This should be a perfect event to distribute counter-recruitment and opt-out information. Recruiter Watch volunteers could accept the completed opt-out forms from the teens at this event should they have not opted out and wish to do so. We would have to make sure that they indicate which high school they are attending and Recruiter Watch volunteers can hand-deliver the completed forms to the respective high schools by October 1 for these students.
Tabling times are as follows:
10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Ideally, there should be two volunteers per shift. (The reason for the later start is that teens tend to sleep in on a Saturday and I doubt that there will be heavy mall activity prior to 10:30 a.m.)

5th annual Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair!
Saturday, September 13, 9-5
Esther Short Park
Check it out on the website, www.vancouverpeaceandjusticefair.org
It looks like a great day, with a super stage lineup, over 50 exhibitors, Peace Heroes (reenactors), and a stage and activities for children. We still need some people to help volunteer, mostly with help with traffic from 8:00-9:00 (you know, pointing like the people who work at the airport aiming jets!), and with cleanup from 5:00-5:30. We do need some people at the headquarters table or Vancouver for Peace table for an hour at a time, as well. This is usually quite fun!
Give me a call, or e-mail me. Thanks! Kay Ellison 360-696-4840 ellisonka@yahoo.com

Vancouver for Peace: What MSUUF is up to
The Social Action Council of MSUUF set peace and justice as the focus for Sept. and October. Consequently, our Peace and Justice team has developed specific events on this theme for which we invite you, members, friends and the community.
Monday, Sept. 8: movie, "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song," 7 pm, main sanctuary. The film includes interviews with Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, and Bruce Springsteen. There will be time for a brief discussion afterwards.
Saturday, Sept. 13: Vancouver for Peace Fair, 9-5 As a sponsoring group, come visit our table. We will have bumper stickers, buttons, free trade coffee and the usual. We also have a Pledge on Societal Peacemaking we would like you to sign, and a petition to Congress to declare August 6th the Nuclear Disarmament Day. Esther Short Park.
Sunday, Sept. 14: peace discussion, 12:45 pm, main sanctuary. "Building Peace Globally," led by Georgia Pinkel and Alan Lindquist. This is from a UUA official peacemaking study guide.
Sunday, Sept. 21, The International Day of Peace, notice only. Established by a UN resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly, this was recognized in 2002 on the beginning of the 20th anniversary which set Sept. 21 as the permanent date. The Assembly's resolution was meant as a constantly "pealing bell" reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or difference of any kind, is to peace.
Sunday, Sept. 28, Peace Pole dedication, 12:45 pm, on grounds. The pole is a gift from the family of the late Rochelle Simons. This will involve a moving ceremony with refreshments and sandwiches afterward.
Sunday, Oct. 12, peace discussion, 1:30 pm, main sanctuary. "The Many Faces of Violence," led by Angie Lindquist, after soup and sandwiches. A UUA guide resource.
Monday, Oct. 13, movies, "Soldiers and Students" (about counter recruitment in the schools), and "The Urban Warrior: The Militarization of American Law Enforcement," 7 pm, main sanctuary.
Sunday, Oct. 19, peace discussion, 12:45 pm, "Just War," led by Lon Heath, a UUA guide resource.
Monday, October 27. Physicians for Social Responsibility will present their new program on the health effects of war, 7 pm, main sanctuary.
All events at 4505 E. 18th St, the Michael Servetus Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
genny kortes for the MSUUF Peace & Justice team.
