Volunteer Opportunities

PDX Peace Coalition has been tabling at various street fairs during the summer. They are circulating the petition to establish Portland as a Sanctuary City for War Resisters as well as the petition to keep Oregon's National Guard from Deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is also an opportunity for Recruiter Watchers to engage young fair goers about opting-out (from having their personal information released to military recruiters through their schools, a provision of No Child Left Behind) and counter-recruitment. There are still volunteer opportunities at the following Street Fairs:

Saturday, September 6 -- Belmont Street Fair

Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7 -- Muddy Boot Organic Festival

Saturday, September 13 -- Alberta Street Fair

Saturday, September 13 -- Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair

Generally speaking, shifts are: 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.; and 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Peace and Family Equality Booths at State Fair -- Donations and Volunteer Energy Appreciated!

Bonnie Tinker of the Seriously Pissed Off Grannies is the Executive Director of Love Makes a Family, a Quaker, and a Portland peace activist. There will be two booths at the Oregon State Fair: one dedicated to "Equality is a Family Value" and another to "Peace Is a Family Value." The booths will be side-by-side. If you are unable to volunteer at the State Fair but would like to support Love Makes a Family in its efforts towards a world of justice and peace and family equality, you can still help by making a donation. DONATIONS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. Having a booth at the State Fair is costly. So, too, is the cost of materials for the State Fair booth. However, it also allows the peace and social justice community to do outreach and dialogue with people "outside of the choir," with whom we don't usually have that much contact.

If you would like to help with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. Please make the check out to "Love Makes a Family." The memo line of the check should indicate that the donation is towards the Oregon State Fair booths and you can even specify which booth you would like the money to go to (i.e., "Peace Is a Family Value" or "Equality is a Family Value"). The mailing address for Love Makes a Family is: Love Makes a Family, P.O. Box 5163, Portland, Oregon 97208.

ALSO:

There are still volunteer opportunities at the Oregon State Fair. The Oregon State Fair runs from Friday, August 22, through Monday, September 1. All volunteers receive FREE admission tickets to the Oregon State Fair. Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) will be taking primary responsibility for the peace booth on the opening weekend which is designated as "Veterans Days," which will provide them a prime opportunity for them to talk to other military families.

Shifts at the booths are as follows: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon; 11:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.; 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.; 8:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. (Friday and Saturday)/8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (the rest of the week).

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact statefairpeaceandlove@gmail.com . After August 21, please call (503) 228-3892. For general information about the Oregon State Fair, please see www.oregonstatefair.org .

Thanks very much for your support!

"EYES WIDE OPEN" -- On Saturday, September 20, at Holladay Park, local Friends' (Quaker) Churches and Meetings will be sponsoring the "Eyes Wide Open" exhibit. The exhibit will run from approximately 9:30 a.m. till 6:00 p.m., with additional shifts for setup and takedown.

Recruiter Watch and Veterans for Peace are awaiting permission to table. Although the Eyes Wide Open exhibit usually does not include tabling, the AFSC and the sponsoring organizations (in this case, the Quaker Churches and Meetings) will usually permit Recruiter Watch and Veterans for Peace to table at venues that might attract a large number of youth. (Recruiter Watch and Veterans for Peace were invited to table at the PCC Campuses last October when Eyes Wide Open was hosted there.) Holladay Park is near the Lloyd Center Mall and adjacent to the MAX and Tri-met buslines. The mall and the park are a very popular "hang" for teens on weekends. It would be an ideal opportunity for Recruiter Watch to gather completed opt-out forms AND counter-recruit.

Details will be forthcoming for volunteer opportunities. The contact will be Joanne Luchini.
