[Comment by Steve Weiss:
I know that the time is short for organizing substantial attendance at this hearing by and for those who will be most affected by this Plan, but I think such organizing is an absolute necessity. The expected rate rises by both gas and electric utility companies, coupled with the scuttling by Senate Republicans last Saturday of Sen. Bernie Sanders bill to double federal LIHEAP funding to $5.2 billion, sets the stage for a perfect storm this fall in regard to heating costs for low income households.
We must start to carefully monitor how the state and counties are distributing LIEAP money. We need to begin that monitoring by attending the August 15th hearing in large numbers. The ominous comment below that "If no one appears for public comment by 10:00am, August 15, 2008, we will close the public hearing" should be sufficient motivation for an all-out effort to maximize a turn-out for this meeting. The alternative is, quite literally, a cold, cruel world for many of us come October. A link to the State Plan appears below. I intend to read it over the weekend.
