Vancouver for Peace
The Vancouver City Council will hear citizen testimony on our peace resolutions this Monday, July 7. Sign in by 6:45 pm, if you'd like to speak. There is a limit of 3 minutes per individual. Address is 210 E. 13th St.
This is the culmination of many months of work. Our committee met individually with the following City Council members: Tim Leavitt, Pat Jalota, Pat Campbell, and Jeanne Stewert. We had hoped they would be the most likely in favor, and we also sought ideas and prospects for passage from them. We were advised to bring in our information the week before because some members want information in advance to study, prior to the meeting.
Today I brought 2 resolutions (A and B) and 31 sheets of petition signatures (about 186), along with a letter explaining that we are urging passage of Resolution A, but that Resolution B could be an alternate or passage of both would be even better.
Our committee (Marion Ward, Kay Ellison, Wilbur and Lori Wood, Edie and Gary Cotton, and Marcia Taylor) wrote Resolution A. It basically relates to how the Iraq War affects our state National Guard and impacts our community social services. (We were advised the City would NOT pass anything of a federal nature.) Tim Leavitt wrote Resolution B in which the City urges our federal representatives to immediately re-prioritize our domestic policy to restore local programs that are of significance to our community. While Resolution A urges that a just and sustainable solution be found to end the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, it doesn't explicitly say Bring Troops Home because we thought that would never pass.
I will bring copies of both resolutions Monday night for your information.
These citizen remarks are televised on cable TV. Of course we know we need to be respectful. There's probably a way to be forceful without being rude or condescending. Personally, when I want something, I try to be very nice.
Let us show up in large numbers. These petitions were sought at least a year ago and now it is our time.
Peace, genny kortes
