School Board asks community for thoughts in filling board position
Portland Public Schools, 501 North Dixon Street / Portland, OR 97227
Telephone: (503) 916-3304 / Fax: (503)
At two meetings this week, the Portland School Board will listen to the community as a first step toward appointing a new board director to represent Zone 4 in North and Northeast Portland. The new appointee will fill the final year in the term of Dan Ryan, who is resigning to lead the Portland Schools Foundation. Before they start accepting applications, board directors want to hear from students, parents, teachers, staff and interested community members. All are invited to share thoughts on the qualities they would like in the new appointee at two facilitated meetings:
* Thursday, June 26, 7 to 9 p.m. Portsmouth School Cafeteria, 5103 N. Willis Blvd.
* Saturday, June 28, 10 a.m. to noon, Ockley Green School Cafeteria, 6031 N. Montana
Spanish interpretation will be available at both meetings.
Members of the Portland School Board represent the entire school district, but are elected from individual zones. The School Board will appoint a new director who:
* Has lived for at least one year in Portland Public Schools Zone 4, which runs from St. Johns east to Concordia, from the Columbia River south to roughly Ainsworth Street (map available here);
* Is eligible to vote in the school district; and
* Is not employed by Portland Public Schools.
On Monday, July 7, the School Board will hold a special meeting to adopt a process and timeline for the board appointment. (The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Blanchard Education Service Center, 501 N. Dixon.) Under the proposed schedule, the school district will accept applications for the volunteer post starting Tuesday, July 8. The process continues with full public participation: Applications will be posted publicly, candidates will make presentations at School Board hearings and the directors will deliberate on the choices and select an appointee. The School Board hopes to name a new director before the start of school in September.

ESTIMATING TOOL FOR NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECTS
Presented By John Nerikaat
John describes himself as a human being and citizen of the world. The work estimator tool he designed determines the number of people and amount of time necessary to meet a goal. In this workshop, John will address topics such as: If you have 3 volunteers who can dedicate 2 hours a month to your effort that will take about 100 hours, how many days will it take to complete your project? If you have 1200 neighbors to distribute a flyer to in the next 14 days, how many volunteers will it take to get it done? These questions and others can be answered in seconds.
