World Without War: A Day of Resistance and Hope
Saturday, March 15
South Park Blocks (S.W. Madison and Park)
Sponsored by PDX Peace Coalition
Recruiter Watch is one of the many co-sponsors, and they sent out this notice, seeking volunteers to help them staff the Portland Recruiiter Watch table, among other things.
GENERAL DETAILS ABOUT THE EVENT:
10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Action Camps
2:00 p.m. March
In addition, from 11:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m., there will a music concert, “World War None,” the PDX Peace Music Festival 2008, with ten live acts, including performances by The MarchFourth Marching Band, Mic Crenshaw, Commition with Ben Darwish, and many more.
HOW RECRUITER WATCHERS CAN HELP:
Recruiter Watch will have a table somewhere between the Military Resistance (counter-recruitment) and Recovery (g.i. resistance and veteran support) (MRR) Action Group’s tent. Recruiter Watch was also invited by the PDX Youth M.O.V.E. tent organizers (in particular, Pam Phan, formerly of the AFSC United Voices/Beats for Peace and currently with the City of Portland Youth Planning Commission, and Marko Lamson of the Community Independence Program) to table there. (The acronym MOVE stands for Motivate – Organize – Vocalize – Empower.) Ideally, Recruiter Watch would like to have 1 person in the PDX Youth M.O.V.E. tent and 2 people at the Recruiter Watch table. The Recruiter Watch table will be staffed in shifts, lasting approximately 1-1/2 – 2 hours. Below are the shifts and the number of volunteers still needed:
10:30 a.m./10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – One more volunteer needed. (Dave Edgar is the other volunteer on this shift.)
12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Two volunteers needed.
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – One volunteer needed. (Note: This is during the march. If you would prefer not to march, this might be a good shift to take.)
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Two volunteers needed.
4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (with takedown between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.) – Two volunteers needed. (Takedown is basically helping load the table and chairs back into Marian’s car and helping “box” the materials.)
Bring sufficient water and snacks. Dress in layers. Bring a chair, although Marian is kindly bringing two. Recruiter Watch will be in close enough proximity to other tables and tents and there ideally will be two volunteers per shift, so if you need to step away to use the restroom or stretch, there should not be an issue about leaving materials “unattended” for a couple of minutes. Have fun! Know your efforts are appreciated!
The following is the tentative schedule for the MRR tent workshops:
10:00 a.m. – Video: “Sir, No Sir” (85 minutes) -- chronicles the g.i. resistance movement during the Vietnam War
11:30 a.m. – Discussion: Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and G.I. Resistance against the Iraq War: What is G.I. resistance? What is the IVAW? What is the Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan testimonial?
12:00 noon – Presentation: Courage to Resist – The Story of Ehren Watada (the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment) featuring Bob Watada and Rose Sakanishi (Ehren’s father and stepmother)
12:30 p.m. – Workshop: Supporting G.I. Resistance Locally – featuring information on the MRR Action Group of the PDX Peace Coalition, the campaign to make Portland a Sanctuary City for war resisters and plans for a g.i. coffeehouse near Fort Lewis in Washington
1:30 p.m. – Video: “Before You Enlist” (15 minutes) – the truth about enlisting during a time of war
2:00 p.m. – Rally on Main Stage followed by the March
2:00 p.m. – (for those not marching) Video: “The Ground Truth” (72 minutes) – Veterans of the Iraq War bear witness to the true consequences of the War
3:30 p.m. – Panel Presentation: The Truth About War – Voices of Veterans and Military Families – Hear from those most directly affected by war; learn about deceitful recruitment strategies, Stop-Loss, multiple and extended deployments, and the other harsh realities of war
4:30 p.m. – Workshop: Supporting Returning Veterans – featuring Michael Taylor, MSW, Ph.D. of Portland State University and Military Families Speak Out, and Sean Lewis, veteran of the First Persian Gulf War and founder of www.soldiersheart.org
5:30 p.m. – Brainstorming: Next Steps – Where do we go from here and how can we best support military resistance and recovery?
ALL DAY – Information on counter-recruitment, IVAW, the g.i. rights hotline, organizations supporting veterans and military families
ALL DAY – Action: Sign the petition to make Portland a Sanctuary City for War Resisters
The Military Resistance and Recovery Action Tent has been organized through the participation of members of Veterans for Peace Chapter 72, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out and Recruiter Watch PDX.
The event is intended to be family-friendly, so invite your family, friends and neighbors. Spread the word. Thanks very much for your continued support.
Please let me know as soon as possible whether you are able to volunteer at any of the shifts listed above. When you sign up, please also include a telephone number.
In peace,
Joanne Luchini
