Jobs with Justice Picket at PSU
Thursday, February 14th
Underpaid professors plan for pickets at PSU: If you think being a college professor is a cushy middle class meal ticket, you probably haven't gotten up close to Oregon's higher ed system lately. At Portland State University, a quarter of the classes are taught by part-timers working on term-to-term contracts. Hundreds of PSU adjunct professors have PhDs in their fields and yet gross less than $15,000 a year, with no benefits of any kind. Last year, embarrassed at the notion of malnourished state college professors, the Oregon Legislature approved an 18 percent increase in higher ed funding. PSU, for example, got $23 million earmarked for faculty raises. So why is PSU's 1,200-member part-time faculty union having such a terrible time getting an acceptable contract? The Portland State University Faculty Association, also known as American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 3571, wants what amounts to 8 percent annual raises in base pay in its next two-year contract, which the union estimates would cost $1.4 million. PSU is offering just under five percent. After more than nine months of unsuccessful negotiations, the two sides begin mediation Monday. The union plans to put up informational picket signs outside Smith Memorial Center on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day.

3rd Friday Irish Ceili Dance (Feb 15)
WHAT: Irish Céilí Dance
WHO: Geraldine Murray and Friends
WHERE: PPAA, 618 SE Alder, Portland, Oregon
WHEN: Friday February 15, 2007, 8pm lesson, 9pm dance
COST: $6-$10
I once saw an Irish dancers dance a jig in hard shoes (those tall unwieldy looking Riverdance shoes) while holding a full pint of Guinness — and not a drop was spilled! This dancers probably could have picked up her tin whistle and played that with her other hand, because she was none other than Geraldine Murray, who will be gracing the stage at the PPAA for the Portland Céilí Society’s 3rd Friday Céilí on Friday , Feb 15th.
What an opportunity to dance off that Valentine’s candy!
Geraldine is one of those rarest of all creatures — an amazing dancer who is also a ferocious musician. This makes her especially brilliant at playing for dances; she can understand the music truly from the dancer’s perspective. She studied tin whistle under Irish Tin Whistle Master L.E. McCullough, Ph.D. and performs regularly at local Irish establishments and festivals.
Geraldine also has choreographed dance and directed music — not only for her own dance school, The Murray School of Irish Dance — but also for locally produced Irish plays. She has performed musically and danced with The Chieftains, The Aurora Chorus and as the opening act for the Grammy award winning Shawn Colvin.
Thought we won’t have the chance to see her dance this time around, this is a great opportunity to dance to a mighty wind. Be there!

Police review board overhaul discussion at city council
Thursday, February 28, 2 PM
City Hall, 1221 SW 4th
The assessment report on the "Independent" Police Review Division (IPR-Portland's Police complaint system since 2002) by consultant Eileen Luna-Firebaugh was released on Thursday, January 24, 2008. Those who have followed the issue of police accountability over the years know that the system tends to favor the position of the police over civilians (just as the police tend to support management over striking workers). The assessment report has some strong recommendations, including that:
--the IPR should be doing independent investigations on its own, by its Citizen Review Committee (CRC);
--the City should assign a staff person directly to the CRC;
--the CRC should hold more appeal hearings, issue more policy recommendations, and do more outreach.
Download and read the report from the Mayor's website at http://www.portlandonline.com/mayor/ . Find more information from Portland Copwatch at http://www.portlandcopwatch.org <http://www.portlandcopwatch.org> or call 503-236-3065. We urge the community to become involved in the discussion between now and Feb. 28, at the hearing, and afterward, as there may not be an opportunity to discuss the future of the IPR again for another 6 years.

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh is a young, Dublin-based fiddler whose thoughtful approach and dedication to understanding the wellsprings of traditional music have made him one of the most interesting musicians in Ireland today.
His CD with piper Mick O'Brien, "Kitty Lie Over", was one of the finest traditional recordings of the last few years. As one reviewer said:
"It's an album you can take at many levels, the gloriously tight duet work, the absence of accompanists, tunes played at a good lick without making the CD player smoke, drawing you into the magical world of the older more melodic tradition."
