It has been a year and a half since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit
the Gulf Coast, forever changing that region and the national political landscape. The impact on the area, the country, and the world has been profound, but the media coverage has grown sporadic and shallow, not addressing the long term deeper issues of racism, classism and self determination that continue.
To combat this misrepresentation and to present images of oppressed peoples organizing and rebuilding in the face of oppression, the Portland Alliance presents "REMAINS AND REBIRTH: An Evening Around Katrina."
This three part event includes: a screening of the post Katrina
documentary Finding Common Ground in New Orleans ; a presentation by New Orleans-based organizer Suncere Shakur; and a question/answer dialogue with the filmmaker Walidah Imarisha and Suncere.

"If universal peace, civilisation, and commerce are ever to be the happy Lot of man, it cannot be accomplished but by a revolution in the system of governments. All the monarchical governments are military. War is their trade, plunder and revenue their objects. While such governments continue, peace has not the absolute security of a day. What is the history of all monarchical governments but a disgustful picture of human wretchedness, and the accidental respite of a few years' repose? Wearied with war, and tired with human butchery, they sat down to rest, and called it peace." -Tom Paine

Carolina Brigade
by Michael C. Marino

A project of the Socialist Party of Multnomah County, the Carolina Brigade seeks to connect a need with a supply. Portland's FreeGeek Community Technology Center (and recycling place) provides us with a way to obtain functioining computers in exchange for work we donate there.
We have a contact with a University worker in South Carolina, who says they could sure use 'em. The goal is to get as many as possible and find a way to ship them economically and as environmentally as possible.
The more olunteers we can get to Free Geek, the better. Come to the Multnomah County Socialist Party meetings (see page 3 for details on where and when), help us get as many working machines as possible moving to the Carolinas.
