"yet a most convincing indictment of the West, including its governments, multi-nationals, mass media, and even the United Nations as un-indicted co-conspirators in the exploitation of not merely Sierra Leone, but of most of Africa. Highly recommended as a sobering companion piece to Hollywood's relatively sanitized version of the same subject matter in Blood Diamond.". More on the film at

What I've Learned About U.S. Foreign Policy
Monday, January 8, 7:00pm
Red & Black Cafe, 2138 SE Division St.
Free Documentary Screening: What I've Learned About U.S. Foreign Policy:
The basic message in this documentary is that the CIA, military-industrial-complex, Pentagon, multinational corporations, media and the government of the United States of America are responsible for the deaths of millions of people in the third world. (Not to overlook the poverty and oppression of millions more.) We support, arm and train dictators and militaries to carry out these evil actions on their own people. All of this is to ensure that we control the natural resources and marketplace of these countries and use the people for cheap labor along with keeping the business of war ongoing.

Jerry Mander, editor of Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples' Resistance to Globalization. Best-selling author and cultural critic Jerry Mander has challenged dominant cultural mind-sets in books such as Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television and In the Absence of the Sacred. In Paradigm Wars, he and coeditor Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, a leader of the global indigenous peoples movement and chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, have gathered an impressive international roster of contributors to document the momentous collision of worldviews that pits the forces of economic globalization against the Earth's surviving indigenous peoples. Mander will discuss the process of creating this book, and the issues it addresses.
"King: A Filmed Record
From Montgomery ti Memphis"
Monday, January 15, 7:00pm and 9:15pm
Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton St.,
USA, 1970 (103 minutes) Compiled from newsreel footage, this film has a heavy impact, showing Rev. King - not as a saint - but as a compassionate man of God with great goals for all people. The film quality is rather rough at times, and the racial slurs shouted are harsh, but the film is powerful. Recommended for those who seek an insight to the man behind the dream.
This film was originally shown at theatres as a "one-time-only" event on March 24, 1970, and was later shown on US television
