Fundraiser for the MST
Friday, December 1, 7:00pm - 9:30pm
12 NE 10th Avenue
Phone Contact: (503) 239-3852
You are invited to attend a fundraising event for Brazil's Landless Movement, the MST (Movemento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra). The MST is the largest social movement in Latin America. They organize to carry out long-overdue land reform in a country with the greatest gap between rich and poor. In Brazil, less than 3% of the population owns two-thirds of the land. At the fundraising event, we will be watching an informative and interesting movie on the MST and their struggles for land reform: organizing encampments and settlements for landless workers in Brazil. The funds raised at this event will go to support the MST's public university, Florestan Fernandes National School, outside Sao Paulo. Education and training play a |

fundamental role so that the settlers and encamped families living in the Agrarian Reform areas can learn about the reality and conditions that surround them. They can thus join forces and organize to transform their own conditions and make it possible for many others to have access to land and a more dignified life. These trainings happen at encampments, settlements, state and regional schools as well as the newly completed Florestan Fernandes National School. The fundraising event is scheduled for Friday, December 1st at 7pm. It will be held at Laughing Horse Books, at 12 NE 10th Avenue, just off the corner of Burnside and 10th. Refreshments will be provided. Please tell your friends, mark your calendars and plan to attend! To RSVP or ask any questions, please contact me at juliasmed333@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you on December 1st! *For more information on the MST, go to http://www.mstbrazil.org. -Julia Smedley |
