Maksed Superheros at rge MLC Great Locker Clean Out

Tuesday, June 13, 9:00am - 10:30am
Metropolitan Learning Center, 2033 N.W. Glisan St.
It's one of those end-of-the-school-year activities: emptying student lockers. Papers, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, markers, scissors, books, shoes, T-shirts, jackets, empty soda bottles, aluminum cans - they all need to go. In Portland Public Schools, an effort is made each year to divert reusable and recyclable materials from going into landfills through the Great Locker Clean Out.
Students at Metropolitan Learning Center throw themselves into the effort. MLC (a K-12 school) is gung ho for green, so much so that there's an in-house team of Sustainability Superheroes. Tuesday morning, June 13, these fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders -- under the direction of the four-teacher Green Team of Ned Hascall, Jeff Creswell, Martha Cade and Claire Cofsky -- will don capes and masks and "green-themed" superhero names in assisting with the Great Locker Clean Out.
The Clean Out's popularity is growing, with at least 30 PPS schools participating this year. Last June, 82 tons of paper were recycled, an increase of nearly 15 tons from the previous year. In addition, schools reused items such as notebooks and pens and donated 600 pounds of materials to Janus Youth, a local charity. This year, donations will be made to Janus, local Boys & Girls Clubs, and SCRAP (School & Community Reuse Action Project
).
