60th Anniversary of Hiroshima Day
Friday, August 5, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Terry Schrunk Plaza, SW 3rd and Madison, Portland 2005 is the 60th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Portland Hiroshima memorial provides an opportunity to honor those killed in the bombings and the hundreds of thousands of survivors who continue to suffer and die from radiation-induced cancers.
The memorial features Michiko Kornhauser, a local writer who lived outside Hiroshima as a girl in 1945 when the bomb was dropped. Featured music includes two local Koto players, Yasuko Fields and Miyoko Maeda, and the Aurora Chorus. Attendees can draw an image of the Jizo Bodhisattva with the Great Vow Zen Monastery, who are sending 270,000 images to Japan for Hiroshima Day to commemorate each victim of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Portland event will be approximately the time the bomb dropped in Hiroshima, Japan.
