David McReynolds pn the Accusation of Being a Democrat
My last time around. Peter Diamondstone is a liar, not simply "in error", since we have
been through this many times before in the Socialist Party. I am not now, nor have I
ever been, a member of the Democratic Party. Peter is fully aware of this.
It is true that I registered as a Democrat in NYC in order to vote for our member of
City Council in Lower Manhattan, but I voted Green (or Socialist or Communist or
Trotskyist, depending on the election) in the final elections. Peter has never
understood the politics of the Lower East Side of Manhattan and I don't expect him
to learn now. But it is a lie direct for him to accuse me of being, at any time in my life,
a member of the Democratic Party.
Doubly so since I ran as a write-in in 1958, as the Socialist Party candidate for Congress
in Lower Manhattan, ran as a Peace and Freedom candidate in 1968 in the same district,
ran for President on the Socialist Party ticket in 1980 and 2000, and as the Green Party
candidate for Senate here in New York in 2004.
I don't think it is a mortal sin to be in the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. But
lying is close to a mortal sin, and Peter Diamondstone, who has run on just about every
and any ticket in Vermont, has turned lying into a fine art. Knowing Peter, he will continue
to make this charge, but I have no interest in further rebutting it.
I will be happy to respond to anyone on this list who wants to write me directly, but this
is not a list I asked to be on, and as it is now constituted (though I see many good friends
and comrades on this list) this list is a waste of time.
Peace,
David McReynolds
